In 2018 Jasmin taught her first mental health workshop to a group of 5th graders at North Beach Elementary School. What she soon discovered was that both kids and young adults tend to cope with their struggles using distractions. Numbing the pain from bullying, toxic home life, low-self esteem, anxiety, depression, stress, etc. can lead to serious mental health disorders down the line. Furthermore, due to the emotional roller coaster Covid-19 has placed upon our community, many have come forward with their need for mental health services.
A fun and effective way to discuss mental health awareness and self-worth with our youth is by using the power of music! During Jasmin’s workshop she explains the power of speaking kind and powerful statements to yourself on a regular basis. On a sheet of paper the audience makes a complete list of all the negative statements they either say to themselves or that others have said to them. Using flashcards, the audience then translates their negative statements into positive affirmations. Lastly, Jasmin creates a funky beat with the audience from scratch using her violin, keyboard and drum pads! Together, they record a live song chanting the positive affirmations as lyrics.
In order for an individual to succeed at handling life’s trials and tribulations, we must be taught how to cope in a healthy way.
